Your Wedding Story (as told by the groom)
Our relationship started off as a purely platonic one as we were family friends and had known each other since childhood. I left Nigeria for the UK in 2005 to work as an IT Consultant but still kept in touch with Fatima. Calls followed a few months later as she was keen on seeking advice from me on her career choices, university and life in the UK in general.
Calls would usually last till the early hours. I think she was actually prospecting me on the sly and I had no idea!
Anyway, she eventually migrated to the UK in 2007 and enrolled at the University of Aberdeen then Surrey to study Nutrition and Nursing in Bucks New University.
It came as no surprise to everyone that we would go on and start dating. We dated for a while and had a beautiful son in 2012. I popped the big question to her on her 24th birthday party dinner, and of course she said yes! All my phone cares and counselling had certainly not gone in vain!
Ceremony and Reception Location. Why did you choose this location?
We got married at Arabian Ranches Golf Club. We were sick of seeing the same type of ballroom weddings in Dubai and while we were not interested in outdoing anyone, we wanted to treat our guests to a refreshingly different destination wedding experience.
Why travel to a destination location with great weather and go indoors? With the majority of our guest travelling in from the UK and US, we knew a great outdoor wedding would appeal to them, so we searched throughout Dubai for ideal locations within our budget.
Our wedding planner came up with Arabian Ranches, and told us it was an idyllic setting for an outdoor wedding celebration. Needless to say, our guest were blown away by the scenic views and setting upon arrival.
What was the inspiration for the wedding (décor, cake and food)?
The inspiration for the décor was the petal details on the bridesmaids’ dresses, and the floral invitation card designed by the groom. Everything stemmed from there. Our planner explored venue styling ideas for outdoor settings and lounges and mobile bars popped up on our storyboard!
As the location was by the lakeside, our planner arranged pashminas in our wedding colours for the ladies in the evening, which doubled as wedding souvenirs. Male guests were given pocketsquares in gift boxes that again, complimented our colour palette.
The cake, too, had complementary hues of coral, blush, ivory and gold with elements of pearls and was iced in pretty soft hues.
With food, we had an international menu, but it was important to us to have Nigerian food as well. This was a bit of an unusual request, not only with this particular venue but for Nigerian destination weddings in Dubai.
In the end, we had Nigerian, Arabian, Asian and American food stations, al-fresco style. Listening to Nigerian music in that setting, with the strong aroma of food, was exactly as we’d imagined the day to be.
