A beautiful California beach, and a well-known landmark in Central Los Angeles served as the backdrops for couple Jaunice and Benjamin’s engagement photos. Kingibe Photography captured the happy couple, who originally hail from New York, and future bride, Jaunice shared the chance-filled meetings that evolved into their engagement story.
When the couple met:
Ben and I met in Harlem, NY, in November of 2008. I was hosting a housewarming party with my roommates to kick-off the holiday season, as well as christen our new apartment. I remember being really excited to bring all my Spelman College and Morehouse College friends together for good food and music with my roommates’ friends, who went to Howard University.
I was opening the door for most of the guests, welcoming them to the party, when to my surprise, Ben was at the door. I was really impressed. He was so handsome, and he brought a gift! Since I was hosting, I was in and out of rooms catching up with friends, and ended up in a room where a group of friends were taking pictures.
Ben hopped into the photo next to me, and then pulled the oldest trick in the book. He intentionally (although he says accidentally) spilled wine on my sweater, and then offered to pay for the dry-cleaning. I declined his offer, but Ben was persistent; offering to add brunch to the dry-cleaning bill offer. I never turn down a meal, but I just brushed off the invite, and kept partying.
The next evening, I attended a house party in Harlem, and Ben was there. He would not let me leave the party until I gave him my phone number and agreed to do brunch. He called me that night to make sure I made it home, and we met for lunch a few weeks later.
I didn’t know at the time that Ben had been invited to the house party just a few hours before it happened. Sometimes I think about the “New York Minute”, and how things change so swiftly in the city. What if Ben was a minute too late crossing 5th Avenue before he saw his college classmate (my roommate) who invited him to the housewarming party? What if he stopped for pizza, or stopped to tie his shoe? A host of other scenarios could have altered our meeting that evening.
I’ve never been so thankful for time, and during the past eight years we’ve created beautiful memories and legendary moments together, filled with love, laughter and adventure. Our love has traveled from Harlem to Hollywood, and we have taken many trips around the world to places like Bali, Indonesia, Bangkok, Thailand, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and a personal favorite, Napa Valley, California, on a few occasions.
We know with God all things are possible, and we look forward to carrying out His will as we embark on a new journey together as husband and wife. Also, for the record…the wine never came out of that sweater.
Inspiration For The Shoot:
Ben and I moved to California three years ago, from New York. For our engagement shoot, we wanted to capture the essence of our time in California by incorporating the beach and natural landscape. We are an easy-going couple, and many of our weekends are spent at the beach relaxing, reading and enjoying each other’s company.
For our first shoot, we chose Laguna Beach for its picturesque views, scenic coves and artistic feel. We also knew the sunset would be gorgeous! We wanted a romantic, creative, yet sophisticated shoot that would showcase us having fun and exhibit our love in an emotional way. Our second shoot was at the Griffith Observatory, a L.A. staple with beautiful architecture, views of the city, and beautiful backdrops of the canyons and “Hollywood” sign.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful engagement story with us. We look forward to seeing the images from the wedding!
