With the reputation of being the best hotel in Europe, this exclusive eight-story hotel was established in 1928. Located in the heart of Paris’ most opulent shopping district, ‘the golden triangle’ this Art Deco landmark closed its doors in October 1997 for exhaustive renovations, and opened in December as the rebranded Four Seasons Hotel George V.
The new owner, Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, spent $167 million to acquire the property from the London-based Granada Group, and $125 million more on rebuilding and design. The project was steered by the construction giant Bouygues, the same firm that refurbished the Louvre; more than 1,100 artisans and workmen were involved in the renovation. With such a cosmic investment, nothing was left to chance and the original ironwork—its finest decorative asset; from the lithe Art Deco balustrades to the feather-motif medallions above the towering glass entrance doors was meticulously restored. Four Seasons Hotel George V is where glamour and romanticism meet culture and history. From the very instance you enter its doors your senses are engaged as you are surrounded with elegance, kindness and exquisite service. Each of its 244 guest rooms and suites is beautifully appointed with opulent details and decorated in the style of Louis XVI. Indeed we can attest to this as our well appointed rooms were most beautifully decorated and comfortable and we even experienced the services of the night patisserie Chef.
On your initial walk into the lobby you will be taken aback by the spectacular floral designs created by world famous floral artist, the Artistic Director, Jeff Leatham. His love for flowers and passion for design was very much evident, and he is the master at using shape, colour and simplicity to dramatic effect. There were at least 100 vases adorned with white flowers around the lobby alone and the colours and floral installations are changed every few weeks so that frequent guests never see the same floral design twice. Jeff Leatham was brought over from the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills has been voted best florist in Europe for three consecutive years and it was a privilege to have the flowers for this shoot generously provided by him.
Photography began in earnest in the Garden Courtyard with the models wearing beautiful and chic wedding gowns by Kosibah accessorised with hats by Just Art Paris, hairpieces by Donna Crain and Olivier Laudus and shoes by Freya Rose. Filming then moved on to the exquisite Salon Louis XIII which features a fireplace that was transported from a Renaissance château in the Loire Valley and two unique 17th and 18th-century Aubusson tapestries. One dates back to 1725 and is a representation of the Emperor of China being presented with gifts from a French courtier and the other one represents the coat of arms of King Louis XIII. In the middle of the salon was a beautiful dining table covered with rich red and gold damask linen.
Flower maestro Jeff Leatham provided the flower arrangements of perfect spheres deep red grand prix roses, pink sweet avalanche roses, interspersed with radiant phalaenopsis orchids in burnished gold vases. Scented pillar candles and pale pink rose petals finished off the floral arrangements. The table was laid with beautiful china, crystal and silverware and opulent laser cut stationery from Intricate Creations. The baroque inspired design was on a gold card with a soft pink overlay to tie in with colour palette. There were also pop-up laser-cut place settings and an extremely detailed table number to match the menus. Taking inspiration from the room, the tapestries and the decor, Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium created two cake designs, the first was an elegant 5 tier rose gold frame cake with vintage bow trim and pale pink sugar flowers. The second, a 4 tier cherished gold cake with a cascade of pink sugar roses, peonies, hydrangeas, green and bronze leaves and butterflies.
The models look breathtaking in Kosibah’s Euterpe and Erato dresses carrying their Jeff Leatham designed orchid and rose bouquets respectively.
We were allowed unprecedented access to other parts of the hotel including the various ballrooms, the art deco lift and the roof top where we took in the sweeping views of Paris’ architectural icons, including the Eiffel Tower, the American Cathedral, and the Sacré-Coeur Basilica. Overall, we had an enchanting once in a lifetime experience made all the more memorable by the wonderful treatment we received from the Four Seasons George V, Paris. Our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Jose Silva, General Manager and Catherine Cardoso Dos Santos for their amazing hospitality.
